This series of scribbled studies in biro form a selection from my ivory sketchbook. I choose photos almost at random that I’m drawn to online as references, and work quickly and freely, rarely taking my pen from the page and finding a blissful flow state. Some remain loose and more abstract, others become layered and deeply contrasted. The unsung artistic value of the humble ballpoint pen (Biro TM) is that it builds onto itself until the drawing almost shines off the page. Printed on this textured, heavyweight bamboo paper, the drawings are elevated from their sketchbook beginnings and represent the triumph over perfectionism that working in indelible ink necessitates.
