Drawn from a photo by Tom Jamieson for the New York Times, this portrait celebrates the beauty of age in one of our absolute top tier national treasures. Drawing wrinkles is my favourite thing - they’re the natural patterns that describe our vitality and feeling, and I chose to keep Dame Maggie’s in contrast to the graphic lines of her scarf and the misty blur of her hair here. I love her enigmatic expression that seems to change depending on my mood when I look at her.
