I drew this portrait from an unattributed headshot I found online. As I was drawing I was thinking about a Guardian feature on Bill Nighy where he talks about being self-conscious under the spotlight of fame. I felt like I had to treat him with care and sensitivity, softening the background and going easy on facial contrast. I’ve loved having him up on my wall - the gentlest of national treasures gazing softly into my space and reminding me of some of the wonderful films he’s brought to life.
