I drew this from a striking photograph by Peter Yang, which stopped me in my tracks. It practically shone off the screen, and I leant into that shine when drawing it, giving Idris’s face a mercurial, sculpted quality. His expression exudes intensity, pride, softness and strength, all reflected in the techniques used for this drawing: sharp lines border blurred, shadowy depths, and contours and angles speak confidently for themselves. He’s frank with us, and his presence on the wall of my workspace has been a motivating force in the mornings!
